I love the work that you are doing at The Dialogue Project Russ. Such important work. I also love how you compared revolutions and unintended consequences that were subsequently overlooked because the profits were rolling in, until hyper-connectivity, when the world could know in a nanosecond what you were doing wrong with videos to prove it. I believe, as you know, in responsible progress, but we seem to have a tolerance for some level of harm with progress. I have seen first hand, how developing countries have prospered with the digital revolution. When I ran sustainability at Millicom, babies in Africa were registered in the census and benefited from government programs. The unbanked got to be banked. SMEs increased their profits by digitalizing their businesses. Women in remote rural towns were educated in business 101 and sold their products on Facebook and Instagram. And children who would have missed out on 1 year of education during Covid learned online with teachers who were up-skilled. The list is big. This is good progress. I hope that your work continues. We need it. I’d love to learn more about it. I know that regulation is unpopular, but on AI, it is necessary. Our failure to regulate social media has provided valuable lessons.

Silvia those are all great examples of the upside of the digital revolution, and there are many more. AI needs some guardrails, for sure, but we shouldn’t smother growth and innovation either. We need to find that sweet spot. The Dialogue Project is promoting ways we can find that same sweet spot in our civic and political dialogue, moving from agendas and ideologies to collaboration and solutions. Thanks for reading!

Beyond my ken, Russ... I've been called a Luddite and I'll take that as a sorta badge of honor. Quit FB years ago , no social media, no smart phone and bots max annoy me ,especially on my flip phone when I'm trying to resolve a problem seeking an actual human being. My niece did her undergrad at Duke... she's far brighter than I.

One of the challenges for generative AI is that the output cannot be automatically linked to the input. Therefore, it is quite possible that an AI tool, ChatGPT, for example, could be generating reports and conclusions that are the product of other AI tools and not a real world source.
